VDMA Symposium on “Additive Manufacturing – the Game Changer of Manufacturing”
World wide, the new concept – ‘Additive Manufacturing or better known as AM is fast gaining momentum and which is transforming industrial processes and ushering in a new future for factories. As can be seen, there’s no doubt that 3DP technologies are leading to the next major industrial revolution. Due its versatility, the Additive Manufacturing plays a key-role in saving time and costs, being decisive for process efficiency and reducing its complexity, allowing for rapid prototyping and highly decentralized production processes.
AM is projected to touch a market of 20 billion Euro by 2020 and is predicted that the impact of the AM industry could accelerate to attain a potential of 250 billion euro by 2025. The Indian Additive Manufacturing market alone is estimated to hit 40 Million Euro in products and services by the end of 2019 with a CAGR (Compounded Annual Growth Rate) of around 20% in the past 5 years. With such meteoric growth rates, the AM market is expected to be worth 79 million USD (Approx. Rs 585-crore) by 2021. While increased domestic production, low manufacturing costs and an increased utilization across industries and application will power this growth, the partnership of key AM players with the governments “Make in India” initiative will further boost its expanding footprint.
Against this backdrop, in order to help this fascinating technology to achieve maturity, building strategies and road maps to migrate/build the business/ machines oriented towards additive manufacturing, which is the contemporary technology for the Mechanical & Plant Engineering globally, for the Indian manufacturing industry, VDMA India organised an International Symposium for the first time on ” Additive Manufacturing – The Game Changer of Manufacturing” at Hyatt Regency, Pune on 26th September 2019.
The day long event covered various façades of Additive manufcaturing ranging from simulation, product, process and materials. More than 80 delegates comprising industry representative, academia, media participated at the symposium.
The event started with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest,, Mr. Krishna Bhojkar, C G M – Manufacturing Engineering, Volkswagen India flanked Mr. Rajesh Nath, Managing Director, VDMA India; Mr. Sandip Roy, Regional Head-East, VDMA India and other speakers and dignatories.
In his welcome address Mr. Nath outlined the impact, benefits and market of AM both globally and locally.
The next speaker, Mr. Sandip Roy from VDMA India made presentation on the role of the addtive manufcturing working group of VDMA in Germany.
There were total 8 speakers under technical session – I & II- out of that ,7 from VDMA member companies like Altair, Arburg, B&R Industrial Automation, igus, Renishaw, Schneider Prototype, Trumpf and one from btg Legal, the Knowledge partner of the event.
The inagural session concluded with the presentation by the “Chief Guest” Mr. Krishna Bhojkar on “Adapting Additive manufacturing in the Indian Automotive Industry – way forward”. Mr. Bhojkar informed the audience on the benefits of AM and how the Volkswagen as an OEM harnessing this technology in the shopfloor.
The technical session I statred after the tea break with the presentation on “How to contract for additive manufacturing” by Mr. Arjun Paleri, Principal Associate, BTG Legal Services. Mr. Paleri explanied the precaution to be taken on the IPR Issue, complaince and legal liability while concluding the contract.
Mr. Ashwin Deshpande, Director Sales, Altair Engineering India made an insightful presentation on “Simulation Driven Design Process for ALM”. He stressed on the advantages of simulation & design tool of the AM process vis a vis the method deployed in traditonal manufcaturing.
In his presentation, on “Additive Manufacturing of fully functional parts made of standard plastic material”, Mr. Frank Kynast, Manager Additive Manufacturing, Arburg explanied the product, process and benefits of AM parts made out of plastic.
Mr.Tanay Sil, Head – Business Development-Industry, B&R Industrial Automation Pvt. Ltd, the last speakers before the lunch the presented on” Additive Manufacturing with virtualization”.
The technical session II started, post lunch, with the presentation by Mr. G.Ragesh Kumar, Product Manager, igus(India) on “igus 3D printing solutions”. Mr. Kumar explained various cmponents made out of AM process, offered by igus in vehicle manufacturing, through illustrations.
The next speaker was Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Business Development Group Manager, Renishaw Metrology Systems who made a presentation on “Advancing AM productivity without compromising quality”. Mr. Kumar explained the audiecne the benefits of AM method compare to the subtractive manuafcturing with the case stuides.
In his inimitable style, Mr. Sachin Gambhire, Associate Director, BD & Marketing, , TRUMPF (India), the last speaker of the symposium, spoke on “Industrial Additive Technologies”. His application oreinted presentation covered 2 methods – Laser meTAL deposit (LMD) and Laser Metal Fusion and the powdwer management in AM process.
Mr. Sandip Roy, moderated both the technical session which was followed by Q&A session.
The daylong symposium concluded with a Hi-tea and B2B session which offered a good interaction and networking opportunity for both the audience and the participating companies.
